[Journal Article]BAI Hefei, ZHANG Yongjing, YE Hongqiang et al.-Chinese Journal of Geriatric Dentistry2026, No.01

Abstract:Objective To compare the bond strength of two universal adhesives containing 10-Methacryloyloxydecyl Dihydrogen Phosphate(10-MDP)on enamel, dentin, and sclerotic dentin in elderly patients, aiming to provide clinical guidance for adhesive selection in restorative treatments for this population. Methods Forty non-carious,intact premolars extracted from elderly patients due to periodontitis were selected and randomly divided into an enamel group(Group A)and a dentin group(Group B),with 20 teeth each group. An additional 20 premolars were collected from elderly patients exhibiting cervical wedge-shaped defects and grade IV sclerotic dentin, and designated as the sclerotic dentin group. Each group was further divided into two subgroups(a Single Bond Universal adhesive subgroup and a Meiytin adhesive subgroup),with 10 teeth per subgroup. The buccal surface of each tooth was prepared for bonding. The teeth in the three Single Bond Universal subgroups were treated with Single Bond Universal adhesive, and the teeth in the three Meiytin subgroups were treated with Meiytin adhesive, followed by incremental placement of composite resin. The micro-tensile strength of specimens from each group was tested using a universal testing machine, and the failure modes were analyzed by stereomicroscope. The micro-tensile strength of 2 kinds of adhesives were performed using Two-way ANOVA analysis, with multiple comparisons conducted using the SNK-q test. The Kruskal-Wallis H test was used to compare the influence of the two adhesives on the failure modes in enamel, dentin, and sclerotic dentin. Results The bond strength results indicated that both Single Bond Universal and Meiytin Universal adhesives achieved clinically acceptable bond performance in the enamel, dentin, and sclerotic dentin groups.Furthermore,no statistically significant differences(P>0.05)were observed in the bond strength or fracture modes between the two adhesives at the three different dental hard tissue interfaces. Conclusion Universal adhesive systems containing MDP demonstrate equivalent bond performance in the enamel, dentin, and sclerotic dentin of elderly patients. This study provides experimental evidence to support the selection of restorative materials for the treatment of severe tooth wear in the aged population.

Research progress on the role of environmental and epigenetic regulation in the occurrence and malignant transformation of Sjögren's Syndrome
[Journal Article]FAN Yixin, WANG Shu-Chinese Journal of Geriatric Dentistry2026, No.01

Abstract:Sjogren's syndrome(SS)is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the immune-mediated dysfunction of exocrine glands, particularly the salivary and lacrimal glands..The etiology of SS is multifactorial, involving a complex interplay of genetic predisposition, hormonal influences, environmental triggers, and epigenetic modifications. The hallmark clinical features are xerophthalmia and xerostomia. In more advanced stages of the disease,a subset of patients may develop systemic complications, with an increased risk of malignant transformation, particularly to B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, including mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue(MALT)lymphoma. In recent years, the role of environmental and epigenetic factors in autoimmune diseases has gradually attracted attention.Environmental factors(such as viral infections, vitamin D deficiency, smoking, etc.)and abnormal epigenetic regulation(such as DNA methylation, histone modification, etc.)play a key role in the occurrence and carcinogenesis of SS.Environmental factors may promote changes in epigenetic modifications by inducing oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and abnormal immune activation, thereby affecting B cell proliferation, apoptosis escape, and malignant transformation. This article aims to review the research progress of environmental and epigenetic factors in SS and related lymphomas.

[Journal Article]XU Jingbo, JIN Wulong-Chinese Journal of Geriatric Dentistry2026, No.01

Abstract:Osteochondroma is typically located at the metaphyseal region of long bones. Its occurrence in the jawbone, particularly in the coronoid process,is exceedingly rare. This article reports a case of osteochondroma of the right mandibular coronoid process in a 63-year-old female. The patient presented with"a painless mass on the right cheek for more than 5 months and a new mass for 1 month".CT revealed a mass in the right coronoid process area.A modified preauricular-zygomatic arch approach was used for expanded resection of the tumor and partial coronoid process resection.During the procedure, the facial nerve branches were fully protected, and zygomatic arch osteotomy, reduction, and titanium plate fixation were performed.Postoperative pathology confirmed osteochondroma. The patient's facial appearance and mouth opening improved, and the prognosis was good. This article focuses on the selection of surgical approaches for lesions located deep to the coracoid process, highlighting the advantages of the modified preauricular-zygomatic arch approach in achieving adequate surgical exposure, ensuring facial nerve preservation, and facilitating osteotomy and reduction. This case serves as a valuable reference for the diagnosis and management of coracoid osteochondroma and the refinement of surgical strategies.

Focusing on the risk of periodontitis and associated cancers in the elderly population:new strategies from clinical early warning of periodontitis to cancer intervention

Abstract:Objective This article examines the clinical association between periodontitis in the elderly population and the elevated risk of various cancers, providing a systematic elaboration from three perspectives:epidemiological characteristics, underlying biological mechanisms, and multidimensional prevention and treatment strategies.Current evidence indicates that periodontitis may contribute to carcinogenesis through mechanisms such as oral microbial translocation, chronic immune-inflammatory responses, activation of key signaling pathways(e.g.,NF-κB,Wnt/β-catenin,IL-6/STAT3),and epigenetic regulation.Based on these findings, this article advocates for the implementation of an integrated prevention and control strategy centered on oral health in the elderly population. The proposed strategy encompasses enhancing oral health literacy, establishing a cancer risk early warning system, promoting stepwise periodontal therapy, facilitating comprehensive management of systemic comorbidities, and strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration among departments of stomatology, oncology, and geriatrics.Such an approach offers a promising pathway for early intervention and holistic disease management in elderly cancer care.

Research progress on the association between periodontitis and hypothyroidism
[Journal Article]HAO Zhaoxue, YUAN Shaozhong-Chinese Journal of Geriatric Dentistry2026, No.01

Abstract:Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by progressive destruction of periodontal tissues, primarily caused by multiple pathogenic microbial communities. It has been increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to the development and progression of various systemic conditions.Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disease, usually caused by reduced synthesis of thyroid hormones or resistance to their effects. If left untreated,it may result in severe complications, affecting multiple physiological functions.Although studies have demonstrated a correlation between periodontitis and hypothyroidism, the causal relationship and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This paper reviews the current research progress on the correlation and possible mechanisms between periodontitis and hypothyroidism from five aspects:epidemiology and clinical research, animal experiments, related treatments, possible mechanisms and common risk factors, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for integrated clinical management strategies targeting both diseases.
