[Journal Article]Ai Qiu-ling-na, Liu Yang-Chinese Medical Humanities2025, No.03

Abstract:Disease writing often appeared in the ancient Chinese retirement memorial to the throne, and a relatively fixed writing template had been formed by the Ming Dynasty, which also conveyed subtle mentality and complex thoughts in different historical contexts.During the Great Ritual period in the years of Jiajing in Ming Dynasty, cabinet ministers such as Yang Tinghe,Jiang Mian,Fei Hong, and Yang Yiqing repeatedly presented memorials to the throne, begging for retirement. In these memorials, the disease writing followed a fixed pattern and routine, expressing the ministers'willingness to reform and their attitude toward the new emperor.Shizong's replies to the disease writing also carried a strong personal touch, offering insights into Shizong's scruples and reliance on the cabinet ministers at the beginning of his reign. The cabinet ministers'memorial to the throne and Shizong's replies together reflect the competition between the chief ministers and the emperor during the shift in scholar-bureacrat tendencies in the years of Jiajing, providing a useful supplement to understanding the relationship between monarchical power and bureaucratic power in antiquity.

Healing Strategies in Chinese Folk Narratives and the Cross-cultural Adaptation of Charon Theory
[Journal Article]Yao Lan, Yuan Xi-Chinese Medical Humanities2025, No.07

Abstract:This paper explores the dialogue and tension between Chinese folk disease narratives and Rita Charon's narrative medical theory from a cross-cultural comparative perspective. The Charon theory emphasizes the role of language narrative in constructing the meaning of diseases, but there are significant differences between its Western individualistic assumptions and the collectivist logic of Chinese folk narratives.Chinese folk narratives transform disease experiences into cultural symbol systems through nonverbal rituals and hidden ethical grammar, achieving the restoration of ethical order and the maintenance of community identity. The healing strategy of Chinese folk narrative not only supplements the intersubjective framework of Charon's theory, but also provides a localized medical humanities practice paradigm—through the reproduction of cultural symbols and the adjustment of ethical relationships,it achieves localized interpretation of disease meaning and resonance with life experience.
