[Journal Article]WANG Junwei, XU Qi, WANG Xinxin et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.10

Abstract:Objective To compare the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS)combined with seated Taijiquan Yun-shou in different sequences on brain functional activation in healthy youths. Methods From September to December,2024,14 healthy young medical interns or probationers were recruited from the Fifth Hospital of Xiamen. They randomly completed three interventions in a crossover design:Yunshou training followed immediately by tDCS(Y-S group),tDCS intervention followed immediately by Yunshou training(S-Y group),and simultaneous implementation of tDCS intervention and Yunshou training(Sim group).Yunshou was practiced in a seated position. For tDCS,the anode was placed over the left primary motor cortex(M1),and the cathode over the right M1.Changes in oxyhemoglobin(HbO2)concentration in the regions of interest were mea-sured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Results Three cases dropped down. The brain regions with significant differences before and after intervention included:CH3,CH7 and CH23 of right prefrontal cortex(PFC)in Y-S group;CH12 of left PFC in S-Y group;and CH9,CH10 and CH25 of the left PFC,CH13 and CH14 of the left sensorimotor cortex(SMC),CH15 of the right pre-motor and supplementary motor cortex(PMC),and CH16 of the right SMC in Sim group(P<0.05).After inter-vention,HbO2 concentration was the highest in the bilateral PFC,bilateral PMC and left SMC in the Y-S group(P<0.05);and it was almost the same between Sim group and S-Y group(P>0.05),except that of the right PFC decreased in Sim group. Conclusion The sequential combination of brain-limb integrated regulation is a key factor influencing the immediate cor-tical activation pattern.

Structural content and psychometric properties of fundamental movement skills assessment scales for school-age children based on ICF-CY:a systematic review
[Journal Article]ZHANG Haoqi, LIU Hua, SUN Pu et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.10

Abstract:Objective To rexplore the content structure characteristics and psychometric properties of assessment scales for funda-mental movement skills(FMS)in school-aged children, based on International Classification of Functioning,Dis-ability and Health-Children and Youth Version(ICF-CY)framework. Methods Literatures on assessment scales for FMS in school-aged children were retrieved from PubMed,Science Di-rect,Web of Science,EMBase,PsycINFO,CNKI and Wanfang data from inception to July,2025.The contents of the included scales were analyzed using the ICF-CY linking rule. The COSMIN RoB tool was used to assess the psychometric properties of the scales, and the GRADE system was applied to evaluate the overall quality of evi-dence. Results A total of 29 studies were included, involving six assessment scales:Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Profi-ciency-2(BOT-2),Canadian Assessment of Movement Skill and Agility(CAMSA),Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder(KTK),Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2(MABC-2),Motorische Basiskompetenzen test Battery(MOBAK),and Test of Gross Motor Development-3(TGMD-3).In the ICF-CY linking analysis, all six tools addressed joint mobility functions(b710)and joint stability functions(b715),while five of them also in-volved hand and arm use(d445).The number of linked items ranged from 5 to 11.BOT-2 and TGMD-3 linked to 11 items, showing broad coverage;BOT-2 focused more on the body function dimension, whereas TGMD-3 em-phasized activity and participation dimensions, especially the performance of hand function in daily activities. In bias risk assessment,TGMD-3 showed the lowest risk(50%rated A and 50%rated B),while MABC-2 had the highest proportion of C ratings(55.6%),followed by BOT-2(33.3%).In evidence grading,TGMD-3 was rated high quality,KTK moderate,BOT-2 and CAMSA low,and MABC-2 and MOBAK very low. Conclusion TGMD-3 is recommended as the primary tool for assessing FMS in school-aged children for broad coverage of ICF-CY items, strong psychometric properties and high evidence quality.KTK,with moderate evidence quali-ty,may serve as a secondary option, but should be used cautiously in China.Although CAMSA is easy to admin-ister,its validity and reliability are low,so it is only suitable for rapid classroom screening.BOT-2,despite cover-ing more ICF-CY items, has a higher bias risk and low evidence quality.MOBAK and MABC-2 have very low evidence quality and are not recommended for current use.

Effect of functional electrical stimulation hand cycling on functional connection of brain networks in stroke pa-tients:a study based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy
[Journal Article]XU Sheng, ZHANG Min, YANG Qingqing et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.10

Abstract:Objective To explore the potential central mechanisms of functional electrical stimulation(FES)hand cycling in promot-ing upper limb motor recovery after stroke. Methods A total of 35 stroke patients hospitalized in the Rehabilitation Center of Changzhou De'an Hospital from May,2023 to December,2024 were enrolled. They sequentially completed 10-minute FES hand cycling and 10-minute sham stimulation(simple hand cycling)tasks. The task order was randomized via dice rolling.Functional near-in-frared spectroscopy(fNIRS)was used to monitor real-time cerebral hemodynamic changes during both tasks to calculate the overall functional connectivity(FC)strength and the FC strength within regions of interest. Results The overall FC strength was higher during the FES hand cycling task than during the sham task(t=2.591,P<0.05),as well as FC between the ipsilateral primary motor cortex(iM1)and ipsilateral somatosensory association cortex(iSAC),iM1 and contralateral somatosensory association cortex(cSAC),ipsilateral pre-motor and supple-mentary motor cortex(iPMC)and iSAC,iPMC and cSAC,iPMC and ipsilateral primary somatosensory cortex(iS1),iPMC and iM1,and contralateral pre-motor and supplementary motor cortex(cPMC)and iSAC(PFDR<0.05). Conclusion FES hand cycling can promote the cortical function remodeling between cerebral hemispheres and the af-fected hemisphere,to integrate sensory-motor function.

Regional differences in brain activation after music intervention for Alzheimer's disease:a meta-analysis of func-tional magnetic resonance imaging
[Journal Article]YANG Sanxia, LIU Qingluan, WAN Jiamin-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.10

Abstract:Objective To systematically investigate the impact of music intervention on neuroplasticity in patients with Alzheimer's disease(AD). Methods PubMed,EBSCOhost,Web of Science,Embase,CNKI,Wanfang data and VIP were searched for studies pub-lished up to February,2025.They were analysed using GingerALE 3.0.2 for meta-analysis. Results Five fMRI studies were included, involving 134 participants(99 with AD).A total of 49 activation coordinates were extracted. The main activation regions in the healthy group were concentrated in the left precuneus, the right inferior frontal gyrus and the right superior temporal gyrus, while the primary activated regions in AD group shifted to the right operculum and adjacent right insula, left superior frontal gyrus, right medial frontal gyrus, and left superior temporal gyrus, indicating that during music processing, neural activation patterns in AD patients shifted from higher-order associative cortices to subcortical structures, accompanied by compensatory changes in frontal lobe activation and a loss of activation in the parietal lobe, particularly in the precuneus. Conclusion Music intervention can activate the relatively preserved subcortical-limbic system in patients with AD and promote compensatory reorganization of the frontal lobes.

Effect of single or combined transcranial direct current stimulation and functional electrical stimulation on grip strength and brain activation in young healthy individuals:a functional near-infrared spectroscopy-based study
[Journal Article]WANG Yingya, LI Taibiao, SU Ahong et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.10

Abstract:Objective To compare the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS),functional electrical stimulation(FES)of the forearm flexors, and their combined intervention on grip strength and cerebral cortical activation in healthy young adults. Methods From December,2024 to March,2025,twelve healthy right-handed young volunteers aged 20 to 23 years were recruited from the Fifth Hospital of Xiamen. They were randomly assigned to receive tDCS alone(tDCS group),FES alone(FES group),or simultaneous tDCS-FES(Sim group)in a crossover design. For tDCS,synchronous bihemispheric stimulation of the primary motor cortex(M1)was applied(anode on the left/cathode on the right).FES was delivered to the right flexor carpi radialis and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles.Isometric maximal grip strength was measured before and after each intervention, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS)was used to synchronously monitor oxyhemoglobin(HbO2)during grip strength tasks. Results A case dropped down. The effect of time on grip strength was significant(F=3.964,P=0.048);Post-hoc tests revealed that grip strength significantly increased after intervention in both FES group and Sim group(P<0.05).The effect of groups was significant on HbO2 of the left prefrontal cortex(PFC)and left premotor and supplemen-tary motor cortex(PMC)(F>3.613,P<0.05);Post-hoc tests revealed that the HbO2 of the left PFC and left pri-mary sensory cortex was higher in FES group than in Sim group, while the HbO2 of the left PMC and right PMC was higher in tDCS group than in Sim group(all P<0.05).Correlation analysis indicated that the grip strength was positively correlated with the HbO2 of the bilateral M1 only in Sim group(r>0.694,P<0.05). Conclusion For healthy young adults,tDCS alone mainly activates motor-related brain regions such as PFC and PMC,while FES alone directly enhances peripheral muscle force output and activates the left PFC to participate in mo-tor regulation. The combined intervention achieves the maximum gain in grip strength through a brain-limb inte-grated regulation mechanism, which may be associated with optimization of neural resource and M1 activity.

[Journal Article]XU Qi, ZHENG Dingzhao, NIU Zhenyuan et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.10

Abstract:Objective To investigate the immediate effect of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS)combined with seated Tai-jiquan Yunshou training under different sequences on cerebral cortical activation in stroke patients with hemiple-gia. Methods From September to December,2024,14 stroke inpatients with hemiplegia were enrolled from the Fifth Hospi-tal of Xiamen.Based on the routine medication and rehabilitation, the patients were randomly assigned to a spe-cific intervention sequence, receiving three interventions in a fixed order:tDCS followed by Yunshou(S-Y group),Yunshou followed by tDCS(Y-S group),and simultaneous tDCS and Yunshou(Sim group).Functional near-infrared spectroscopy was used to detect oxyhemoglobin(HbO₂)concentration in bilateral sensorimotor cor-tex,premotor and supplementary motor cortex, and prefrontal cortex before and after each intervention. Results Three patients dropped out.In all the regions of interest,inter-group effects were significant in HbO₂ concentra-tions(F>3.697,P<0.05),and interaction effects were significant in some brain regions(F>3.276,P<0.05).Post-hoc test showed a general trend of Sim Group≥S-Y Group>Y-S Group(P<0.05),although some varia-tions existed across different brain regions. Conclusion Both simultaneous intervention(tDCS and Yunshou)and tDCS followed by Yunshou are more effective on immediate activation of key motor-related cortices in stroke patients with hemiplegia than Yunshou followed by tDCS intervention.

[Journal Article]LOU Yantao, WANG Jiawei, XIAO Xiaofei et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.09

Abstract:Objective To compare the effect of cold therapy at different temperature on the pain and motor function of delayed onset muscle soreness(DOMS)in the upper limbs of young men. Methods From April to July,2024,24 healthy young men(aged 22 to 26 years)were selected from the Key Laboratory of Winter Sports Technical Diagnosis and Skill Evaluation of the General Administration of Sport of China at Shenyang Sport University, and randomly divided into control group, group A and group B equally. An isokinetic muscle strength testing system was used to establish a DOMS movement model for elbow joint. Then, group A re-ceived cold therapy at a constant temperature of 10℃for 10 minutes, group B received cold therapy at a con-stant temperature of 6℃for 10 minutes, and the control group received natural recovery. They were measured relative peak torque(rPT)of the elbow flexor muscles at angular velocities of 60°/s,120°/s and 180°/s with iso-kinetic muscle strength testing system, and root mean square(RMS)of EMG amplitude of biceps brachii was synchronously collected using a wireless surface EMG system, immediately, and 24,48 and 72 hours after model establishment;while, they were assessed with Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)for pain. Results The main effects of VAS score,rPT and RMS were significant in both intra-group(F>15.716,P<0.001)and inter-group(F>6.478,P<0.01).At 24,48 and 72 hours after model establishment, the VAS scores showed a trend of control group>group A>group B(P<0.05).Although the pairwise comparison results of rPT and RMS among the groups varied at different time points after model establishment under different angular veloci-ties,overall,rPT presented a trend of control group<group A<group B(P<0.05),and RMS presented a trend of control group>group A>group B(P<0.05).The higher the angular velocity and the longer the time, the more obvious this trend was. Conclusions Cold therapy can relieve the pain of DOMS in the upper limbs of young men and promote the recovery of muscle strength, especially at a constant temperature of 6℃.

[Journal Article]WEI Chenjing, DUAN Jinjuan, CONG Yan et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.09

Abstract:Objective To develop a systematic and scientific assessment-adaptation-evaluation framework for wheelchair cushions. Methods A mixed-methods approach integrating literature review, qualitative interviews and Delphi expert consultation was employed.First,27 relevant studies were identified through systematic literature searches, comprehensively synthesizing wheelchair cushion types, performance indicators, key assessment/adaptation elements and evalua-tion methods.Second,semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 wheelchair users and six assistive tech-nology specialists.Interview transcripts were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis to extract themes and deeply explore user needs and practitioner experiences.Based on the literature and interview find-ings,the research team developed a preliminary protocol comprising an assessment form,an adaptation process table and an effectiveness evaluation form.Finally,20 multidisciplinary experts participated in a two-round Del-phi consultation.Experts rated the importance of items using a 5-point Likert scale.Consensus was analyzed us-ing Kendall's W coefficient and the coefficient of variation(CV),supplemented by mean importance scores and full-score frequency to refine the protocol. Results The consultation demonstrated excellent expert engagement(100%response rate)and strong authority(Cr=0.90).The finalized protocol comprised of an assessment form(four primary domains/21 secondary items),an ad-aptation protocol(two primary domains/eight secondary items)and an evaluation form(two primary domains/15 secondary items).Statistical analysis revealed Kendall's W=0.20(P<0.05),mean importance scores of(4.48±0.72),CV=(0.15±0.05),and full-score frequency of(60.80±16.39)%,indicating acceptable consensus. Conclusion The assessment-adaptation-evaluation method for wheelchair cushions constructed in this study is scientific, comprehensive and operable, and can provide a standardized tool for clinical personalized adaptation.Future studies should enhance the applicability of the method in diverse clinical settings.

[Journal Article]LUO Dandan, SHEN Min, WANG Sujuan et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.09

Abstract:Objective To examine resting-state whole-brain network connectivity in children with Chinese developmental dyslexia(DD)and typically developing(TD)children using functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS). Methods From November to December,2024,19 DD children aged six to twelve years in Children's Hospital of Fudan University were enrolled, along with 18 TD children matching age and sex.Regions of interest included frontal cortex(FC),temporal lobe(TL),occipital lobe(OL)and parietal lobe(PL).Resting-state data were acquired by fNIRS for five minutes in both groups.Functional connectivity strength was calculated at rest, and between-group differences in connectivity strength and brain networks were compared, based on the time series of oxyhe-moglobin concentration. Results The whole-brain functional connectivity strength was higher in DD group than in TD group(t=2.100,P<0.05).Connectivity between the right OL-right FC(t=2.426,P<0.05),right OL-left FC(t=2.483,P<0.05),right TL-right FC(t=2.568,P<0.05)and right TL-left FC(t=2.304,P<0.05)were stonger in DD group than in TD group. The major regions exhibiting differences of whole-brain connectivity between two groups were the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, right visual association cortex, right frontal cortex, left orbitofrontal cortex, left visual association cortex, left primary visual cortex and right primary motor cortex. Conclusion Children with DD exhibited significantly stronger connectivity in the right occipital and temporal lobes,as well as between these regions and the prefrontal cortex, suggesting possible right-hemispheric compensation for insufficiency in the left-hemisphere reading network.

Abstract:Objective To compare the effect of different intensity of neuromuscular training(NMT)on muscle strength and knee joint function of patients after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction(ACLR). Methods From January,2023 to January,2024,60 ACLR patients in Changhai Hospital were selected, and they received the same intensity of NMT from one to eight weeks after surgery.Eight weeks after surgery, they were randomly divided into low intensity group(n=30)and high intensity group(n=30),and then they received different inten-sities of NMT from nine to 16 weeks after surgery, each training session lasted one hour, with three sessions per week, totaly 48 sessions. The Lysholm score, knee flexor and extensor muscle strength and muscle endurance-were compared at eight weeks and 16 weeks after surgery. Results After group training, the Lysholm score significantly increased in both groups(|t|>13.739,P<0.001),and was higher in the high intensity group than in the low intensity group(t=-2.574,P<0.05);in the high intensity group, the relative peak torque and endurance of the extensor and flexor muscles improved at angular velocities of 60°/s,120°/s and 180 °/s(|t|>2.320,P<0.05);in the low intensity group, the flexor peak torque improved at all the three angular velocities(t>2.177,P<0.05),the extensor peak torque improved at angular velocities of 60°/s and 180°/s(|t|>1.715,P<0.05),and the extensor endurance improved at angular velocity of 60°/s(t=-2.293,P<0.05).However,there was no significant difference in the relative peak torque and endurance of the extensor and flexor muscles at all the three angular velocities(P>0.05). Conclusion Both high and low intensity NMT could improve the muscle strength, muscle endurance and knee joint func-tion.Maybe,high intensity is superior to low intensity.Further verification is still needed.

Adaptive temporal alignment-based motion intention recognition for intelligent lower-limb prostheses
[Journal Article]SU Benyue, LIU Wenyao, ZONG Wenjie et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.09

Abstract:Objective To address the issue of motion misclassification caused by individual gait differences and fixed time window data extraction in motion intention recognition for intelligent lower limb prostheses, this study proposes a motion intention recognition method based on adaptive temporal alignment. Methods In lower limb motion analysis, for continuous gait cycle data,inter-class variability across different steady-state modes was utilized to detect gait pattern consistency through inter-cycle frame differencing. For samples identified as single steady-state modes, the dynamic time warping algorithm was introduced to align adjacent mo-tion sequences, thereby reducing individual variability.Haar wavelet 4-level decomposition was applied to ex-tract low-frequency coefficients for feature vector construction, and classification was performed using a support vector machine. The experimental protocol was designed as follows:three inertial measurement units were used to collect lower limb acceleration and angular velocity data from subjects performing thirteen locomotion modes. The test subjects included ten healthy participants and one transtibial amputee. The locomotion modes consisted of five steady-state modes(level walking, stair ascent, stair descent, ramp ascent, and ramp descent)and eight transition modes(mutual transitions between level walking and stair ascent/descent,as well as ramp ascent/de-scent). Results Simulation tests on ten healthy individuals and one amputee showed recognition accuracies of 99.24%and 100%for five steady-state modes, and 98.51%and 89.11%for all thirteen motion modes, respectively. Conclusion This study proposes an adaptive temporal alignment-based motion intention recognition method. The pro-posed approach effectively reduces the interference of individual gait variability on feature representation,en-hances the consistency and discriminability of gait features, and ultimately improves recognition performance.

[Journal Article]ZHOU Xinyue, YE Ruixue, MA Yaqi et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.09

Abstract:Objective To analyze the research status, hotspots and development trends in the field of central post-stroke pain(CPSP). Methods Relevant literatures up to April 8,2025 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database.CiteSpace 6.4.R1 advanced version was used for bibliometric and visualization analysis of publication trends,country/institution/author collaboration networks, keywords and burst terms. Results A total of 119 publications were included.Researches on CPSP have shown an overall upward trend since 2002,which could be divided into a slow development period(from 2002 to 2015)and a rapid growth period(from 2016 onwards). The number of published papers reached its peak in 2024.China and the United States led in pub-lication volume.Harvard University was the most productive institution, and Asian institutions contributed a sig-nificant number of publications. The most prolific author was Gao Ju.The top five keywords by co-occurrence frequency were central post-stroke pain, neuropathic pain, pathophysiology, transcranial magnetic stimulation and motor cortex stimulation.Keyword clustering analysis generated ten clusters, which were integrated into four core research areas:pain types, clinical characteristics and diagnostic techniques, pathophysiological mecha-nisms,and treatment strategies. The bursting words included spinal cord and molecular expression in recent years;pathophysiology was the most bursting word. Conclusion In recent years, researches on CPSP are significantly increasing, focusing on pathophysiological mecha-nisms and intervention strategies.Future studies should strengthen the integration of basic and clinical research, promote multidisciplinary collaboration, and enhance research quality.

Effect of acupuncture synchronized speech training on post-stroke motor aphasia
[Journal Article]WEI Jingyi, WANG Xiaojing, WANG Ran et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.09

Abstract:Objective To observe the effect of acupuncture synchronized with speech training on speech function of patients with post-stroke motor aphasia. Methods Sixty inpatients with post-stroke motor aphasia were selected from the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Univer-sity of Traditional Chinese Medicine, from January to August,2023.They were randomly divided into control group(n=30)and synchronous group(n=30).Both groups received acupuncture and speech training;the con-trol group received acupuncture in the morning and speech training in the afternoon, while the synchronous group received acupuncture and speech training synchronously, for three weeks. They were assessed with Chi-nese Rehabilitation Research Center Standard Aphasia Examination(CRRCAE),Non-Language-Based Cognitive Assessment(NLCA)and Communication Activities of Daily Living(CADL)before and after treatment. Results The subscores of CRRCAE and NLCA,and score of CADL increased in both groups(|t|>2.081,P<0.05)after treatment, and they were better in the synchronous group than in the control group(|t|>2.680,P<0.05). Conclusion Synchronous mode of acupuncture and speech training is more effective on post-stroke motor aphasia than time-sequence mode.

Effect of transcranial direct current stimulation on α-band brain connectivity in disorders of consciousness
[Journal Article]LI Hongwei, HUANG Binbin, ZHU Chuanhua et al.-Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice2025, No.09

Abstract:Objective To investigate the modulatory effects of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS)on directional informa-tion flow within the α-band functional brain networks in patients with disorders of consciousness(DoC). Methods From October,2023 to October,2024,30 patients with DoC were recruited from Binzhou Medical University Hospital. They were assigned to minimally conscious state(MCS)group(n=15)and unresponsive wakefulness syndrome(UWS)group(n=15).All the patients received conventional rehabilitation and tDCS at left dorsolater-al prefrontal cortex for four weeks.Ten-minute electroencephalography data were collected before and after treat-ment. Results Two cases dropped out from MCS group.Granger causality(GC)connectivity between the prefrontal and pari-etal regions enhanced in both groups after treatment, particularly in bidirectional pathways between bilateral pre-frontal and parietal regions,as well as between frontocentral and parietal regions, and limbic-central connections.GC connectivity was extensive and bidirectional in MCS group, and localized and unidirectional in UWS group. Conclusion tDCS can enhance directional information flow between bilateral prefrontal and parietal regions in patients with DoC,for promoting recovery of consciousness.Neural plasticity was better in MCS patients than in UWS patients.
