Exploring the etiology, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of cardiac remodeling in microgravity based on the trinity view of"Physique-Qi-Spirit"
[Journal Article]Yan Sitong, Liu Luyang, Wang Jiarou et al.-Space Medicine & Medical Engineering2025, No.05

Abstract:Cardiac remodeling in microgravity exerts effects on astronauts'health and space mission efficiency. This paper analyzes the etiology, pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of cardiac remodeling in microgravity based on the Trinity View of"Physique-Qi-Spirit"of traditional Chinese medicine. The microgravity environment disrupts the heaven-earth qi interaction law described in"Suwen Yin Yang Ying Xiang Da Lun":"Earth qi ascends to form clouds through heavenly evaporation, while heaven qi descends as rain".This disruption causes upward reversal of human qi and cephalad fluid shift, consequently influencing the dynamic balance of the physique-qi-spirit system and inducing cardiac remodeling. The core pathogenesis initiates with qi upward reversal at the initial stage, advances through spiritual disturbance during progression, and culminates in physical impairment at the terminal stage. We therefore propose a holistic"physique-qi-spirit"co-regulation strategy implemented via three therapeutic principles:regulating qi,stabilizing spirit, and restoring physique. This approach aims to restore the dynamic balance of the"physique-qi-spirit"system in microgravity, apply the concept of"preventive treatment of diseases",holistically prevent or delay cardiac remodeling, and provide Traditional Chinese Medicine solutions for safeguarding astronauts'cardiovascular health.

[Journal Article]Rong Peijing, Zhao Yanan, Zhao Dan et al.-Space Medicine & Medical Engineering2025, No.04

Abstract:With the development of manned space technology,long-term space missions have gradually become a reality, but the problem of sleep disorders faced by astronauts has become increasingly prominent. The combined effects of microgravity, abnormal circadian rhythm, confined space pressure and psychological stress in space environment lead to the significant decline of sleep quality of astronauts, which is manifested as difficulty falling asleep, sleep fragmentation and reduction of deep sleep.Based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, this paper systematically analyzes the etiology and pathogenesis of astronaut sleep disorders, and reveals the unique advantages of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation in space medicine, which provides a new idea for the construction of non-pharmacological sleep intervention system.Although there are technical difficulties,non-pharmacological therapy such as transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation is still a key breakthrough to solve sleep disorders in astronauts. It is expected to become an important part of space medicine and provide safe and efficient health protection for long-term space missions.

Application of the Kidney Essence-Sea of Marrow-Eye Axis theory, from the perspective of biomechanical imbalance,in spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome
[Journal Article]Liu Shiyu, Zhang Yihang, Liu Xinmin et al.-Space Medicine & Medical Engineering2025, No.04

Abstract:Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome(SANS)is among the predominant health risks of prolonged space missions, with biomechanical disequilibrium considered a pivotal mechanism driving its onset and progression. This biomechanical imbalance is intrinsically linked—structurally, physiologically, and pathologically—to the Kidney Essence-Sea of Marrow-Eye System Axis,a theoretical framework in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)describing the functional interconnection among the kidney, brain, and visual system. Thus, investigating this axis in the context of SANS from a biomechanical perspective may provide novel insights into prevention and management strategies. From the TCM standpoint, the pathogenesis of SANS reflects a functional dysharmony of the Kidney-Brain-Eye Axis, rooted in Shen Jing(Kidney Essence)deficiency, with insufficiency of the Sea of Marrow as a pivotal link, meridian obstruction as the pathway disturbance, and ocular system atony as the external manifestation.Therapeutic principles emphasize addressing both root causes and secondary manifestations, integrating tonification with dispersion, and combining internal and external modalities.Core treatment strategies include tonifying the kidney and replenishing essence, nourishing the marrow to enhance vision, dredging meridians to regulate Qi,and invigorating blood circulation while promoting diuresis to mitigate fluid retention.
