A green procedure for the synthesis of 3 -carboxylmethyl -5,5-diphenyl hydantoin in water

Abstract：An important chemical material , 3-carboxylmethyl -5 ,5-diphenyl hydantoin was synthesized by one-step using 5,5-diphenyl hydantoin as a raw material in the presence of alkali .The effects of alkalis, amounts of 5,5-diphenyl hydantoin , and refluxing time on the yields were investigated .The optimal conditions were as follows:the molar ratio of 5,5-diphenyl hydantoin to sodium monochloroacetate was 1:1.1, refluxing for 3 h in sodium hydroxide solution , and 3-carboxylmethyl-5,5-diphenyl hydantoin with high purity was ob-tained in 68%yield.The product was characterized by IR , 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and MS.
