Considerations and Discussions about Sponge City
[Journal Article]Che Wu, Zhao Yang, Li Juanqi-South Architecture2015, No.04

Abstract:After the Sponge City Development Technical Guideline: Low Impact Development was released and sponge city pilot area which organized by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Ministry of Water Resources and Ministry of Finance set up, the construction of sponge city became off a boom. But there were stil some perplexity and chalenge within implement, which reduce efficiency and scientific rationality. This paper discussed perplexity and chalenge, and then identified some key points of sponge city implement based on existing infrastructure and difficulties in the implementation process.

Human-Scale Urban Form:Measurements, Performances, and Urban Planning & Design Interventions
[Journal Article]Long Ying, Ye Yu-South Architecture2016, No.05

Abstract:AbSTRAcT The human-centered perspective has been frequently mentioned in many national policies on urbanization in China, like National Guidelines for Developing a New Type of Urbanization and Central Urban Work Conference. Accompanying with the raising call for human-centered considerations in urban planning and design, a series of new data environment and new analytical methods bring new potentials for achieving this goal. For instance, the new data environment consisting of big data and open data could provide foundation for in-depth study of urban form and its related performances. New techniques and methods, e.g. Lidar imaging, virtual reality, eye-tracking, deep learning, big data mining and visualization, provide emerging insightful analytical approaches. Therefore, the paper proposes the conceptual framework of human-scale urban form that can be defined as visible, touchable, and perceptible urban forms in people’s daily lives. It is a meaningful supplement for classical urban morphology focusing on street blocks and parcels. Folowing this route, the paper firstly reviews existing studies related to the concept of human-scale urban form. Three essential issues of human-scale urban form, i.e., measurements, performances, and urban planning and design interventions, are then discussed to guide future researches. After that, several initial studies made by the authors of this paper are ilustrated as empirical examples. This paper is an initial attempt to create the concept framework of human-scale urban form and explore its potentials in urban planning and design practices. It could promote the transition towards more scientific planning and design paradigm, and finaly contribute to better urban lives.

Three Key Strategies to Achieve A Sponge City:Retention, Slow Down and Adaptation
[Journal Article]Kongjian YU-South Architecture2015, No.03

Abstract:This article articulates three key strategies in achieving water-resilient cities, or sponge cities: retention, slow down and adaptation. Three projects are ilustrated to demonstrate these strategies: the Qunli Storm Water Park in Harbin City, Liupanshui Minghu Wetland Park in Liupanshui City and Yanweizhou park in Jinhua City. These three strategies shal be integrated in dealing with floods and stormwater to form a systematic solution, namely: "retention to absorb the water at the source, slow down to reduce the destructive forces of water during the flow, and adaptation to be resilient with floods at the end".

Research on Urban Wind Environment:Technology Evolution and Integration of Evaluation Systems
[Journal Article]Yang Junyan, Zhang Tao, Tan Ying-South Architecture2014, No.03

Abstract:With the increasing urbanization and density of urban space, urban wind environment became one of the focuses of multidisciplinary research. The wind environment plays an important role on al the diffusion of air pol utants, heat island effect, and thermal comfort perception of open space. This article reviews the oversea studies on technical evolution and evaluation system construction of urban wind environment. Analyzes the evolution of its technology research in field measurement research, physical simulation research, and computer numerical simulation research. Then integrates the existing urban wind environment evaluation system features. These related technical methods can play a positive supplement in urban planning.

Inheritance of Traditional Residence and its Architectural Memes

Abstract:Traditional residence is a significant material carrier of regional culture, which determines the developing trend of traditional residence in return.Ameans to discover the deep cultural inheriting genes from traditional residences, their features adn styles to carry forward, and to integrate and harmonize buildings with the natural and human environment of that region, are current issues that are worth pursuing by researchers and designers. In combination with living examples, analysis and expolration basesd on arhitectural culture of traditonal residence and its inneriting genes, this paper discusse how to extract essences from traditional residences and transplant them into modern design.to create a new style of modern residence with strong cultural regional identities

Optimization and Combination of Green Building Technology in the Architectural Design
[Journal Article]Feng Ya, Gao Qinglong, Zhong Huizhi-South Architecture2015, No.02

Abstract:In views of real project, the optimization method of the implementation of green building technology to architectural design is investigated in this paper. It is suggested that the green-building design process should be integrated with multi-specialty, including architecture, structure, facility and building physics, and the ‘integral design’ should be carried out by combining computer simulations from the early stage. The combination and balance point among various specialties need to be found, which can make the designs meet al the requirements from architectural creation, building function and ecosystem. The green building technology needs to be optimized for both green target and investment.

Conservation of Space of lntangible Cultural Heritage in Traditional Villages
[Journal Article]Liang Buqing, Xiao Dawei-South Architecture2016, No.03

Abstract:Space where the intangible cultural heritage located in traditional vilages includes six categories of different function: ritual space, education space, performance space, commercial space, production space and living space. And other categories could be proposed such as micro-space, meso-space and macro-space on different scales, and dot, line and surface on different forms. Base on a systematic analysis, the conservation strategies have been optimized as folowed. Firstly, emphasising a cultural space of heritage through community empowerment; secondly, integrated conservation with the reconsideration of space composition; last but not the leaset, authentic conservation to maintain the original form of the space.

Main Points of Lightscape
[Journal Article]Wu Shuoxian-South Architecture2017, No.03

Abstract:The concept of "lightscape", or landscape which is mainly caused by lighting or the changing of light and shade is proposed. The necessity of establishing the discipline of lightscape is also illustrated. Some typical lightscape examples in the world from ancient time up to now are introduced. The main points and possible research topics about this discipline are described.
