Biological rhythm disorders in the aerospace environment and acupuncture prevention and treatment strategiesAbstract:Long-term spaceflight, characterized by drastic changes in spatial position, disrupts the Earth's inherent environmental periodic signals, such as the day-night light-dark cycle. This leads to a misalignment between the external environmental cycles and the body's endogenous biological rhythms. The cumulative effect of this persistent"time difference"severely disrupts the core biological pathways that regulate the circadian rhythm. It triggers a series of neuroendocrine and behavioral stress responses, exemplified by sleep-wake disorders, which have become a core medical problem constraining the success of long-term space missions and astronaut health.Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)posits that aligning with the rhythmic changes of heaven, earth, day, night, and the four seasons, and maintaining the dynamic balance and harmonious functioning of the body's Yin and Yang vital energies, are fundamental principles for safeguarding vitality and resisting external pathogens and internal injuries. However,in the prolonged weightlessness, confinement, and abnormal lighting environment of deep space flight, the bond between the human body and natural rhythms is forcibly severed.Yin and Yang Qi become difficult to sustain, the mechanisms of ascent, descent, exit, and entry are obstructed, the visceral Qi transformation functions are impaired, and the circulation of Qi and Blood becomes disordered, ultimately leading to the onset of various disorders. This paper, grounded in the TCM temporal medicine perspective of"correspondence between heaven and human"(tian ren xiang ying)and the theories of Yin-Yang and Qi-Blood,meticulously reviews the historical classics and modern research on acupoint intervention strategies for addressing rhythm disorders and harmonizing Yin and Yang.Building upon this foundation,it innovatively proposes and argues for an integrated acupoint prescription strategy:the"Bei Xin Wu Xue"combined with the classic paired points Zhaohai(KI6)-Shenmai(BL62)on the lower limbs to regulate the dynamic balance of the Yin and Yang Heel Vessels(Yin/Yang Qiao Mai),and the classic paired points Taichong(LR3)-Yongquan(KI1)to guide Qi downward. This combination aims to work at multiple levels-"Heart-Brain,Yin-Yang,Liver-Kidney"-to calm the Heart Spirit, clear the Brain Mansion, and tonify the Liver and Kidney. The goal is to restore Yin and Yang Qi to an orderly and coordinated state, thereby assisting the disordered biological rhythm system in regaining homeostasis. This provides a novel TCM-inspired approach of"rhythm regulation and equilibrium restoration"(tiao shi fu heng)to safeguard the long-term in-orbit health of astronauts.
Application and research progress of Traditional Chinese Medicine in radiation environmental protectionAbstract:With the ongoing development of nuclear energy, radiotherapy, and space exploration, ionizing radiation poses a growing threat to human health.Studies have confirmed that high-intensity or prolonged exposure can lead to apoptosis, genetic damage, immune dysfunction, and multisystem disorders, underscoring the urgent need for effective protective strategies. This review aims to explore the molecular mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)in radiation protection and assess its potential applications in extreme environments such as aerospace.A systematic literature review was conducted to summarize existing research on anti-radiation effects of single herbs, compound prescriptions, and Chinese patent medicines. The pharmacological features and action mechanisms of heat-clearing and detoxifying,tonifying,blood-activating,and tranquilizing herbs were analyzed, with emphasis on their applications in radiotherapy support and aerospace radiation protection.TCM exerts radioprotective effects through multiple biological pathways, including antioxidation, free radical scavenging,DNA repair, immune regulation, and tissue regeneration. Some Chinese patent medicines have been clinically applied as adjuncts to chemo-and radiotherapy, demonstrating benefits in reducing side effects and improving treatment tolerance.Certain herbal components have also shown promising potential in space radiation protection research.TCM has significant potential in radiation protection, particularly in high-risk settings such as spaceflight, where it offers integrated regulatory and protective effects.Future research should focus on elucidating mechanisms, standardizing efficacy evaluation, and promoting clinical translation to support its broader application in nuclear energy, medical radiotherapy, and deep space exploration.

Research progress on effects of spaceflight environmental factors on immune function and corresponding Traditional Chinese Medicine protectionAbstract:With the advancement of space exploration missions, space station operations have entered a routine phase, where single-flight missions last up to six months.Previous studies indicate that the spaceflight environment severely compromises the immune system, increasing the susceptibility to diseases. As primary responders to pathogenic challenges, immune cells exhibit exceptional sensitivity to gravitational alterations and background ionizing radiation in space, with their dysfunction being a critical health risk. For innate immunity, the complex space environment disrupts macrophage polarization and phagocytosis, neutrophil chemotaxis and killing, natural killer(NK)cell cytotoxicity, and dendritic cell maturation, leading to functional impairment of innate immune defenses. For adaptive immunity, microgravity and radiation induce cellular immune dysregulation by suppressing T cell proliferative capacity and perturbing Th1/Th2/Treg subset balance, while simultaneously undermining humoral immunity through interference with B-lymphocyte protein synthesis, blockade of developmental maturation, and reduction of effector B cell populations. This review summarizes recent advances in understanding space environment-induced immune perturbations and protection options using traditional Chinese medicine, focusing on microgravity and radiation. It not only deciphers molecular mechanisms underpinning immune cell dysfunction but also provides a theoretical foundation and drug-targeting strategies for developing countermeasures against spaceflight-specific immune dysfunction.
Regulatory effect and mechanism of fuping on macrophage M1/M2 polarization in preventing and treating ionizing radiation-induced inflammatory damage to the immune system in miceAbstract:Objective With the continuous advancement of China's deep space exploration and space station construction missions, the issues of radiation protection and health security for astronauts in special space environments have become increasingly prominent, gradually emerging as a core research topic in the field of special medicine. To investigate the protective effect and mechanism of Fuping decoction against ionizing radiation-induced inflammatory damage to the immune system in mice, and to verify whether it relieves radiation-induced inflammatory injury by regulating macrophage M1/M2 polarization balance. Methods An in vivo radiation injury model was established using Balb/c mice. The expression levels of pro-inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6 in the spleen and thymus, and the phagocytic rate of peritoneal macrophages were detected.Mouse-derived macrophages were cultured in vitro to establish an in vitro radiation injury model. The secretion levels of inflammatory factors TNF-α,IL-6,and IL-10 were measured, macrophage polarization was observed by immunofluorescence, and the protein expression of the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway was analyzed by Western blot. Results In vivo experiments showed that Fuping significantly reduced the phagocytic rate of peritoneal macrophages and the contents of TNF-α and IL-6 in the spleen and thymus of irradiated mice.In vitro experiments demonstrated that Fuping restored the M1/M2 polarization balance of macrophages, decreased the expression levels of TNF-α and IL-6,increased the expression of IL-10,and inhibited the protein expression of TLR4,MyD88,and NF-κB in irradiated macrophages. Conclusion Fuping alleviates radiation-induced inflammatory injury by inhibiting the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway and regulating macrophage polarization balance, providing an experimental basis for the development of natural radioprotective drugs.
Olfactory diagnostic analysis system based on a low-pressure chamber, simulated weightless human bedridden volunteers, and general population oral odor mapping analysisAbstract:Objective Hypobaric chamber and simulated weightless bed are essential methods for aerospace medical research, and conducting state assessment of volunteers before and after hypobaric chamber and simulated weightless bed tests is an essential guideline for aerospace implementation medicine. To further improve the efficiency of human condition assessment,in addition to the conventional biochemical and physiological indicators, the human oral exhaled gas can be used for condition assessment, and the olfactometry acquisition equipment and analysis software can collect and detect most volatile gases to complete the human oral exhaled gas data acquisition.Conducting comparative analysis of olfactory mapping data from different populations may be a means to assess the status of the body. Methods The olfactometry acquisition equipment was used to collect the oral exhaled breath olfactometry profiles of the general population, hypobaric cabin volunteers, and ambulatory volunteers. The olfactometry analysis software was used to calculate the 12 eigenvalues of the olfactometry profiles and the t-SNE downscaling, and the radar plots were used to analyze the olfactometry profiles of the general population,low-pressure cabin volunteers, and ambulatory volunteers respectively.A comparative analysis of different populations was conducted.Results(1)The t-SNE mapping data of the general population and the ambulatory volunteers were almost indistinguishable;(2)the t-SNE mapping data of the hypobaric cabin volunteers and the general population had a slight overlap, but the distinguishability of the vast majority of the t-SNE mapping data was obvious;(3)the t-SNE mapping data of the hypobaric cabin volunteers and the ambulatory volunteers were distinguishable with no overlap, and the ambulatory t SNE data are highly aggregated, and the distribution of t-SNE data in low-pressure cabin is more discrete;(4)there are 2-3 sensors with large eigenvalues and a large range of variation for both low-pressure cabin volunteers and recumbent volunteers after training activities, and the common sensor with a large range of variation is S6.Conclusion Olfactory diagnostic analysis mapping may be a means to assess the health status of the body and may be useful for spaceflight health status assessment in the future. The analysis and application of flight health state assessment can be a reference in the future.
Literature research on acupoint prescriptions for acupuncture and moxibustion in the prevention of aerospace depression syndromeAbstract:Under the influence of long-term space flights and the confined space environment,it is very easy to induce space depression syndrome, mainly manifested as decreased emotional stability, sleep disorders, mental fatigue, etc.,which seriously affect the living conditions and working abilities of astronauts. The current treatment methods mainly focus on psychological support and drug intervention.Acupuncture has a good effect in treating depression. Therefore, starting from the TCM pathogenesis and modern medical pathogenesis of aerospace depression syndrome,we conducted literature retrieval from databases such as the Chinese Medical Classic,China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),Wanfang,VIP,PubMed,and Web of science. For the included literature,we adopted the stratified evidence scoring method and combined the TCM mechanism and modern medical mechanism of the effect of acupuncture.A prescription for acupuncture points was constructed to provide a basis for selecting acupuncture points for the prevention of aerospace depression syndrome through acupuncture.
The mission and responsibility of acupuncture and moxibustion in aerospace medicineAbstract:With the completion of China's space station and the normalization of long-duration orbital missions, mitigating the multi-system physiological and pathological changes induced by the space environment has emerged as a central challenge in space medicine.Acupuncture and moxibustion,as a treasure of traditional medicine, has an important mission in the aerospace health protection system by virtue of its overall regulation, homeostatic quality regulation and non-pharmacological intervention advantages. Before flight, acupuncture point stimulation can enhance the physiological reserve capacity and regulation ability of astronauts, laying the foundation for coping with the challenges of extreme environments;during the on-orbit phase, transcutanclus electrical acupoint stimulation can prevent and control multiple system disorders, such as space motion sickness, weightlessness muscular atrophy, and bone loss, and maintain the internal homeostasis of the organism;after the return, acupuncture can effectively promote the reconstruction of the organism's function and rehabilitation.Consequently, this paper advocates for the integration of acupuncture and moxibustion throughout the entire cycle of astronaut health management—encompassing"preventing disease before onset, preventing progression of existing conditions, and preventing relapse after recovery"—to leverage its strategic role in health protection for future deep-space exploration missions.
