Translations of Parallel Structure in Short Stories from Chinese to English in the Perspective of Functional Translation Theory:As Shown in the Translation of The Sea Dream
ZHANG Chen-xia
Abstract:This paper makes Functional Translation Theory as a entry point, focused on the analysis of the translation of parallel structure in Wang Meng's short story The Sea Dream. And the result shows that to better realize the affective function of rendering the atmosphere, two ways are used most frequently in the translation of parallel structure in short stories. On one hand, literal translation is often used when the parallel structure has a small number of typical long sub-clauses.On the other hand, free translation is preferred when the parallel structure is not typical enough with many short sub-clauses, which implies that these short sub-clauses can be rearranged into a new sentence conveying the same meaning.
