Abstract:Apelin is the endogenous ligand of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor-related protein (APJ), and together they form the Apelin/APJ system. The Apelin/APJ system is widely distributed in various tissues of the human body, such as the heart, blood vessels, and brain tissue. It plays important roles in vasodilation, blood pressure reduction, anti-atherosclerosis, and neuroprotection, and participates in the occurrence and development of many cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, and ischemic stroke. This review summarizes the correlation between the Apelin/APJ system and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and its role in the progression of these diseases.
