Research Progress on the Role of Ferroptosis in Atherosclerosis and Its Targeted Therapy
CHEN Yang
Abstract:Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic progressive vascular disease characterized by lipid deposition, inflammatory response, and arterial wall remodeling. Its occurrence and development are closely related to endothelial dysfunction, lipid metabolism disorders, and inflammatory infiltration, as well as the programmed death of various vascular cells such as endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and macrophages. Ferroptosis is a death mode with specific metabolic dependence, playing an important role in plaque formation, progression, and rupture. This review summarizes the basic mechanisms of ferroptosis, systematically elucidates its role in the development of AS, and deeply explores the key molecular regulatory pathways of ferroptosis and its application prospects as a therapeutic target, aiming to provide new insights and theoretical foundations for the study of AS mechanisms and targeted treatment strategies.
