Abstract:This review discusses the correlation between microglial polarization, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and ischemic stroke, as well as the theoretical and mechanistic basis of TCM-mediated microglial polarization in the treatment of ischemic stroke. As one of the innate immune cells in the central nervous system, microglia can mediate immune responses in the central nervous system, exerting neuroprotective or neurotoxic effects. They can polarize into M1 (pro-inflammatory) and M2 (anti-inflammatory) phenotypes. The M1 phenotype promotes inflammation by releasing pro-inflammatory mediators, while the M2 phenotype inhibits inflammatory responses by releasing anti-inflammatory cytokines. TCM has the characteristics of multiple pathways and multiple targets in the treatment of diseases.
