Research Progress on the Mechanism of Macrophage Ferroptosis in Atherosclerosis and Traditional Chinese Medicine Intervention

Abstract:Atherosclerosis is the pathological basis of various cardiovascular diseases. Macrophages play an important role in the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis. Ferroptosis is a non-apoptotic form of cell death dependent on iron ions, which is closely related to multiple physiological mechanisms. Traditional Chinese medicine is a unique therapy in China, and it has clear efficacy in the treatment of atherosclerosis. TCM formulas, single compounds, and active ingredients can regulate macrophage ferroptosis, showing unique advantages in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. This review focuses on macrophage ferroptosis, summarizes the relevant signaling pathways, key proteins, and research progress on the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis by traditional Chinese medicine, aiming to enrich clinical diagnostic and therapeutic ideas and methods for atherosclerosis.
