Abstract:Objective: To analyze the prevalence and risk factors of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) combined with type 2 diabetes in a tertiary hospital. Methods: From December 24, 2022, to February 28, 2023, patients diagnosed with COVID-19 who were hospitalized in the Department of General Medicine and Respiratory Medicine of the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University were selected as the study subjects. Complete medical records were extracted, including general information, classification of COVID-19, oxygenation index, laboratory test results, complications, and disease outcomes. Clinical characteristics, classification of COVID-19, comorbidities such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and biochemical examination items were compared between patients with and without diabetes. The risk factors were analyzed. Results: A total of 217 patients were included, of which 150 (69.12%) did not have diabetes, and 67 (30.88%) had diabetes. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in body mass index (BMI), history of hypertension and coronary heart disease, systolic blood pressure levels, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and fasting glucose levels (P < 0.05). Classification of COVID-19: mild in 68 cases (31.34%), severe in 114 cases (52.53%), and critical in 35 cases (16.13%). Multivariate analysis showed that systolic blood pressure was an independent risk factor for diabetes in patients with COVID-19 [OR = 1.022, 95% CI (1.004, 1.040), P = 0.015]. Conclusion: The majority of patients with COVID-19 in our hospital were severe, with a prevalence rate of 30.88% for diabetes combined with COVID-19. The risk factor for diabetes combined with COVID-19 is the level of systolic blood pressure.
