Abstract:Many patients with heart failure often have iron deficiency, which is independently associated with increased mortality. Iron deficiency may limit the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in myocardial cells and the generation of erythroid precursor cells. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors treat heart failure by increasing hemoglobin and hematocrit levels. The use of SGLT2 inhibitors can enhance erythropoiesis and reduce the occurrence of heart failure. SGLT2 inhibitor therapy may improve iron deficiency by increasing intracellular bioavailable Fe2+ levels, thereby enhancing heme synthesis in erythroid precursor cells and ATP production in myocardial cells, thus delaying the progression of heart failure. This review summarizes the research progress on the effect of SGLT2 inhibitors on iron deficiency in patients with heart failure.
