Research Progress on the Relationship between Periodontitis and Troponin

Abstract:Troponin is a special protein located on the surface of cardiac muscle, and it is a unique component of cardiac muscle cells. Chronic periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease initiated by dental plaque microorganisms. During the progression of periodontitis, the number of periodontal pathogenic bacteria and related factors in the periodontal pocket increases, which induces the opening of Ca2+ channels, allowing Ca2+ to enter endothelial cells and cardiac muscle cells, causing damage to cardiac muscle cells. The troponin complex is hydrolyzed, leading to an increase in serum troponin levels. Troponin can induce the expression of periodontal adhesion molecules, promoting the adhesion of inflammatory cells, ultimately leading to the further development of periodontitis. This review summarizes the relationship between the two and their related mechanisms.
