Abstract:Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death dependent on iron, caused by imbalance in iron, antioxidants, and lipid metabolism. Ferroptosis participates in the regulation of various diseases. Increasing evidence shows that ferroptosis is involved in the development of atherosclerosis (AS) through endothelial cells, macrophages, and smooth muscle cells. Targeting ferroptosis may be a new strategy for treating AS. Traditional Chinese medicine has the advantages of multiple components and multiple targets. This review discusses the key aspects of ferroptosis occurrence, summarizes the correlation between ferroptosis and AS, and the research progress of traditional Chinese medicine targeting ferroptosis, aiming to provide new insights into understanding the mechanisms of AS and exploring potential therapeutic targets.
