The Relationship Between Uric Acid and Coronary Artery Calcification in Dialysis Patients
Abstract:Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum uric acid and coronary artery calcification in patients undergoing maintenance dialysis [ chronic kidney disease stage 5 dialysis (CKD5D)]. Methods: One hundred and one CKD5D patients were enrolled in the study. Clinical data of all patients at study entry were collected. Coronary artery calcium score(CACs)was counted by multi-slice spiral CT scanner. The patients were divided into three groups based on serum uric acid concentrations (group I, the lowest quartile; group Ⅱ, the middle quartiles; group Ⅲ, the highest quartile). To compare the incidence and severity of coronary artery calcification between groups, and investigate the relationship between uric acid and coronary artery calcification by pearson' s correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: (1)Eighty-two patients(81. 2% )had coronary artery calcification, and median CACs was 184. 3. The incidence of severe coronary artery calcification(CACs > 400)was 41. 6%. (2)The incidence of coronary artery calcification in group I,Ⅱ,Ⅲ were 76. 9%,84%,and 80%, respectively. Severe coronary artery calcification were 46. 2% 、 38% 、 44%, respectively. No deferences were found between groups. (3)Data from the univariate analysis showed uric acid was not related to CACs. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed gout, not serum uric acid, to be independently associated with CACs. Conclusion: Coronary artery calcification is common and serious in CKD5D patients. Serum uric acid is not related to the coronary artery calcium score. Gout is associated with an increased risk of coronary artery calcification in CKD5D patients.
