Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between electroencephalogram (EEG) characteristics and mental retardation in children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Methods Sixty children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in our hospital from July 2013 to April 2016 were selected as the case group, and the 60 normal children were selected from the psychological Department in our hospi-tal were selected as the control group. The mental intelligence scores and the rmental retardation, and the Lennox-Gastaut EEG char-acteristics were recorded, and the correlation was analyzed. Results The VIQ and PIQ scores were 54.22±15.30 and 50.11±23.50 in the case group, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in the control group of 92.94±6.20 and 92.49±8.11 (P<0.05). The rate of mental retardation was 53.3% in the case group and 3.3% in control group, which was significantly higher than that in con-trol group (χ2=9.114, P<0.05). In the case group, there were 22 cases (36.7% ) with normal EEG background,34 cases (56.7% )with background slower,58 cases (96.7% ) with awake or fast activity (10 to 14 times per second) during sleep,51 cases (85.0% ) with com-prehensive,diffuse spike slow (less than 3 times per second). Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the course of dis-ease,family history of mental retardation, seizure frequency, and hysteresis origin history were the main independent risk factors for in-fluencing mental retardation ( P<0.05). Linear correlation analysis showed that the characteristics of EEG in children with Lennox Gastaut syndrome (background EEG slow, fast spike activities, and spiritual movement) were obvious correlation to the mental retarda-tion (r=0.341,0.255,0.319,P<0.05). Conclusion Lennox-Gastaut syndrome child has slow EEG background, quickly activity and diffuse spike, and its psychomotor retardation rate is relatively high. There is significant correlation between the EEG characteristics and mental retardation. It is helpful to improve children's psychomotor development based on the EEG characteristics of Lennox Gastaut syndrome.
