Clinical Observation on the Therapy of Soothing Liver and Invigorating Spleen for the Treatment of Depression with Liver-qi Stagnation and Spleen-deficiency Syndrome Type

Abstract:Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of the therapy of soothing liver and invigorating spleen for the treatment of depression with liver-qi stagnation and spleen-deficiency syndrome type.Methods One hundred and fifty patients with depression and liver-qi stagnation and spleen-deficiency syndrome type were randomly divided into three groups:western medicine treatment group (group A,n=50) treated with sertraline hydrochloride,traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment group (group B,n=50) treated with the therapy of soothing liver and invigorating spleen decoction,and combine the traditional Chinese and western medicine treatment group (group C,n=50) treated with sertraline hydrochloride and the therapy of soothing liver and invigorating spleen decoction.Three treatment course lasted for3 months.The clinical efficacy was assessed with Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD),Symptom Rating Scale of TCM.Results The scores of HAMD and Symptom Rating Scale of TCM in three groups after treatment were significantly lower than those before treatment (P<0.05).The scores of HAMD and Symptom Rating Scale of TCM in group B were significantly lower than those in group A after treatment of 2 months and 3 months (P<0.05 or P<0.01).The scores of HAMD and Symptom Rating Scale of TCM in group C were significantly lower than those in group B after treatment of 1 months,2 months and 3 months (P<0.05 or P<0.01).Conclusion Combined with the therapy of soothing liver and invigorating spleen and sertraline hydrochloride has a better curative effect on depression with liver-qi stagnation and spleendeficiency syndrome type,which indicates that Chinese medicine has an advantage in the treatment of depression.
