Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of Puerarin on blood biochemistry of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) in the condition of long-term hypertension. Methods Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were given normal saline by intraperitoneal injection as control group and SHR were randomly assigned to four groups including model group, losartan group, high dose puerarin group and normal dose puerarin group. All the rats were treated for ten weeks and relevant indexes of blood routine, liver and kidney function were observed. Results Compared with model group, the number of erythrocytes, hematocrit and hemoglobin significantly reduced in high dose puerarin group and normal dose puerarin group (P<0.05 or P<0.01).The levels of alanine amino-transferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), urea and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in losartan group were lower than that in model group (P<0.05 or P<0.01).The level of AST in normal dose puerarin group was lower than that in model group (P<0.05).Conclusion Long term intraperitoneal injection of puerarin had protective effect on liver function, renal function and erythrocyte damage. There was no obviously hemolytic reaction happened in this study.
