Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of Chinese herbal decoction on plasma brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)in patients with vascular dementia. Methods One hundred and two patients with vascular dementia were randomly divided into two groups:The control group(n=50)treated with aniracetam and nimodipine, and the treatment group(n=52)treated with Shuang-huang Yizhi decoction(SYD)for 12 weeks. The changes of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)syndrome scores and the plasma BDNF levels were observed before and after treatment. Results The TCM syndrome scores in treatment group were lower than that in con-trol group after treatment(P<0.05).After treatment of 6 weeks, the plasma BDNF levels in treatment group were higher than that of before treatment(P<0.05).After treatment of 12 weeks, the plasma BDNF levels in treatment group were higher than that in control group(412.03 pg/mL±231.52 pg/mL vs 365.41 pg/mL±228.17 pg/mL,P<0.05).Conclusion SYD can increase the plasma BDNF levels in patients with vascular dementia and reduce TCM syndrome scores.
