Abstract:Supplemental lighting for surveillance can significantly improve the imaging quality of nighttime traffic monitoring, and as such,it is widely used. However, despite the illumination improving the clarity of the monitoring system's images, high luminance light sources can cause intense glare for drivers, which negatively impacts driving safety. Therefore, how to reduce the safety risks caused by glare while ensuring monitoring quality has become an urgent issue. To address this, this study investigates the impact of glare from supplemental lighting on drivers'visual functions and comfort by varying the brightness and quantity of the supplemental lights, while maintaining constant vertical illuminance for surveillance. The research shows that, firstly,as the number of supplemental lights increases and their luminance decreases, the response time generally decreases, with significant changes in response time occurring once the number of lights exceeds three.Secondly, after passing the supplemental lights, the response time gradually decreases and stabilizes after 1000ms.Thirdly,subjective experiments reveals that there is no significant difference in subjective discomfort when the number of supplemental lights is less than four. Therefore,by increasing the number of supplemental lights and reducing their luminance, the driving response time can be shortened, thereby improving driving safety. This study provides important evidence for determining the appropriate luminance range for supplemental lights, enhancing nighttime driving safety, and offering valuable references for the setup and management of such lighting.
