Abstract:China's urban development is transitioning from incremental expansion to optimizing existing resources.Small to medium-scale open spaces, which are closely tied to daily public life and widely distributed, serve as key carriers for enhancing citizen's sense of well-being.However,the diverse distribution and significant variations in these spaces'conditions make it challenging to apply a unified approach for improving nighttime environmental quality.Drawing on urban daytime micro-renewal methodologies, this study conducted data collection and evaluation of nighttime environments across 122 open spaces in Gusu District of Suzhou. Methods included online surveys,on-site assessments, and indicator measurements.By integrating qualitative and quantitative analyses, the study explored common issues, typical characteristics, and renewal demands of these spaces.Based on the findings, the necessity and applicability of introducing micro-renewal methods into nighttime environment updates were discussed, focusing on social context demands, improvements of operational systems, updates to standards and regulations, and the establishment of new management frameworks. The research aims to provide novel perspectives and methodological references for enhancing urban nighttime environmental quality in the future.
