Abstract:Personnel's psychological well-being and productivity may be negatively affected by prolonged exposure to an environment that lacks windows or has insufficient daylight.Artificial skylights represent an innovative lighting technology that simulates the solar spectrum and sky, thereby creating an indoor experience that feels connected to outdoor lighting. To quantify the short-term effects of artificial skylights, this experiment involved 33 participants who completed comparative questionnaire experiments in windowless spaces equipped with either artificial skylights or LED lighting.Participants rated the room atmosphere and their emotional states across multiple dimensions and participated in two different work efficiency tests. The results revealed that artificial skylight illumination, compared to LED lighting, enhanced participants'positive evaluations of the room atmosphere, strengthened their sense of connection to the outdoors, and,to some extent, improved emotional states while reducing stress levels. However,no significant differences were observed between the two lighting environments in the overall objective assessment of short-term work efficiency. This study provides preliminary evidence for the potential positive effects of artificial skylights.Future experiment will incorporate physiological measurement tools for further investigation.
