Research on the Dark Area under the Luminaire of LED Road Lighting

Abstract：Based on practical experience,we studied why one dark area occurs just under the luminaire of LED road lighting.Several factors,such as light distribution of luminiare,surface reflection of the road,pole distance,and observation angle,are analyzed.Two conclusions are achieved.Firstly,the main reasons of the non-uniform (i.e.dark area) are the too-big observation angle,and road surface (too much light is reflected directionally because of long-term usage of the road,which makes the road close to mirror).Secondly,bad light distribution and too big pole distance may lead to bad uniformity of the light on the road.Three improvement suggestions are discussed:reducing the distance-to-height ratio,increasing the elevation angle of the backlight,and increasing the lumen output at large angles.
