Abstract:As part of natural environment, daylighting plays an important role in the classical gardens of Suzhou.Lighting and shadow vividly interpret "Imitation of Nature", which is Chinese traditional philosophy and aesthetic characteristics.Based on impacts of Chinese traditional building technology and culture, daylighting condition in landscape architecture of classical gardens of Suzhou is very unique.On-site measurements are applied to study daylighting in two four-sides Halls, which is one of main landscape architecture in Classical gardens. The data analysis finds that indoor overall illumination levels are quite low in the four-sides-halls, though the landscape buildings are famous at open big windows on four directions. Also, interior daylighting distribution in the measured building is quite even, and change slightly within whole day.Veranda which attached the Four-sides-Hall acts an transition and regulatory role for interior daylighting. It creates a rich and unique daylighting condition which is different from modern architecture.
