A Study on the Photodynamic Therapy Based on LED Light Sources in the Treatment of Periodontitis

Abstract：Light-emitting-diodes ( LED) can be used in medicine as a light source for photodynamic therapy ( PDT) , due to its low price , simple structure and highly flexibility .In this paper , the feasibility of LEDs applied to PDT is experimental studied .Methylene blue ( MB ) is used as the photosensitizer ( PS ) , the Prevotella bacteria is treated with different light intensity , then the survival rate of the Prevotella bacteria is evaluated to demonstrate the sterilization efficiency of the LED device .The results show significant bacterial reduction , which indicates that using LEDs to replace lasers as light sources for PDT is a promising way to treat periodontitis .
