A Pilot Quantitative Study of Daylighting in Nanjing Schools

Abstract:Daylighting has been considered as the most favorite and important lighting source in schools throughout the history .But very few studies have been conducted in this field in Chinese schools .Based on a literature review, the authors think that daylighting design standards for Chinese schools need to be improved .The paper introduces this pilot study , which carried out on-site walkthrough and measurements in 12 classrooms in 2 secondary schools in Nanjing , P.R.China.The pilot field study reveals that the most classrooms meet the current daylighting design standards of China .However , daylighting uniformity and appearance , directly sunlight penetration within a classroom are identifiable problems , especially in the classrooms with one-sided daylighting . Also, low illuminance levels on and reflected glare from the blackboard are another key problems in the surveyed schools .
