Abstract:Objective To compare the effects of intravenous indwelling needles versus standard steel nee-dles for mannitol infusion in patients with lumbar disc herniation. Methods A total of 80 outpatients with lumbar disc herniation who received mannitol treatment at Huadu District Maternal and Child Health Hospital(Hu Zhong Hospital),Guangzhou, from January 2023 to October 2023,were included in this study.Patients were divided into an observation group(indwelling needle infusion,n=30)and a control group(standard steel needle infusion,n=30)based on the infusion method used.Stability, incidence of complications, and patient comfort levels were compared between groups. Results In the control group, four patients experienced catheter dislodgement(dislodgement rate of 13.33%),significantly higher than the observation group, where no patients experienced dislodgement(dis-lodgement rate of 0.00%),indicating a significantly higher stability in the observation group(P<0.05).One patient in the observation group experienced complications(overall complication rate of 3.33%),which was significantly lower than the six patients in the control group with complications(overall complication rate of 20.00%,P<0.05).Additionally,29 patients in the observation group reported comfort(comfort rate of 96.67%),which was signifi-cantly higher than the 22 patients in the control group reporting comfort(comfort rate of 73.33%,P<0.05).Con-clusion Compared to standard steel needle infusion, using an indwelling needle for mannitol infusion in patients with lumbar disc herniation reduces catheter dislodgement rates, enhances stability and patient comfort, and lowers the incidence of complications, making it a recommended approach.
