Investigation on the emergency medical resources of 41 hospitals in Guangxi ZhuangAutonomous Region

Abstract:Objective To investigate the status quo of emergency medical resources in all levels of hospital in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, for improving emergency medical service quality. Methods By using questionnaires and field examination, the emergency medical resources of 41 hospitals were investigated, and 36 hospitals were investigated on first aid techniques. Using SPSS19.0 software for statistical analysis. Results (1) First-aid personnel: there were significant differences in the secondary and tertiary hospitals in the 3 years or above experience(χ 2=6.793,P=0.009), the number of emergency physicians(U=63.500,P=0.002), the number of emergency nursing (U=51.000,P=0.000), annual ER visits(U=37.000,P=0.009), emergency doctors degrees(χ 2=54.451,P=0.000), emergency physicians titles(χ 2=26.841,P=0.001). (2) First-aid equipment: in tertiary hospitals, emergency equipment were fully equipped, but the median number of hemodialysis machine, bedside X-ray, bedside B-ultrasound, and fiber bronchoscope was less than one; in secondary hospitals, breathing machine and electric defibrillation apparatus were fully equipped, the median number of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) machine was less than one, and the median number of hemodialysis machine, bedside X-ray, bedside B-ultrasound, and fiber bronchoscope is all zero; in primary hospitals, it was in severe shortage of all emergency equipments. For the other first-aid equipments investigated in this study, the difference were statistically significant in the number of endotracheal intubation mirror and gastric lavage machine between secondary and tertiary hospitals (P<0.017). (3) First-aid skills: in both secondary and tertiary hospitals, they were capable of tracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation and electric defibrillation, ect. However these were generally not available in primary hospitals. Conclusions Tertiary hospitals in Guangxi province were generally acceptable in the availability of equipment, and the first-aid skills among the staffs, but insufficiency of emergency staff. In comparison, there was insufficiency of staffs and machine in secondary hospitals, and there was severe shortage of both emergency equipment and skills in primary hospitals.
