Abstract:Located on the luminal surface of vascular endothelial cells, the endothelial glycocalyx is composed of proteoglycan, glycosaminoglycan, glycoproteins and a wide array of molecules from plasma. Pulmonary endothelial glycocalyx serves as a barrier to neutrophil adhersion and extravasation. And it also has an impact on the active regulation of endothelial permeability. Endothelial glycocalyx plays a pivotal role in acute lung injury. Protection or reconstruction of glycocalyx may prove to be a new therapeutic approach for acute lung injury.
