Abstract:Objective To explore clinical features, clinical manifestations and necessary laboratory tests of neuromyelitis optica (NMO), in an attempt of improving the accuracy of early diagnosis. Methods 72 cases from the General Hospital of Chinese People’s Armed Forces were collected.Their epidemiological features, clinical manifestations and the necessary laboratory tests were then ana-lyzed.Results (1) The average morbidity age was 36.2 ±10.3 year-old.There were 66 cases with relapse-release course of disease.40 cases NMO patients were with optic neuritis as the first symptom.(2) The positive rate of AQP4 antibody in serum is as high as 90.3%, whereas it comes to 69.4% in cerebrospinal fluid.30% of patients had abnormal autoantibody and oligodonal bands can be seen in 19.4%of patients’ cerebrospinal fluid.(3) Spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that the disease involved rate in thoracic spinal cord, cervical cord, and lumbar spinal cord were 84.7%, 69.4%and 19.4%, respectively. Conclusions NMO occurs mostly in middle-aged woman, and the common course of disease is relapse-release.The AQP4 antibodies are mostly positive both in ce-rebrospinal fluid and serum.
