Comparison of the Effects of E-Max Onlays versus Lithium Disilicate Full Crowns on Masticatory Function and Gingival Health after Root Canal Treatment

Abstract：Objective To evaluate the efficacy of E-Max onlay restorations in restoring masticatory function and promoting gingival health in root-canal-treated posterior teeth.Methods A total of 104 patients who had completed root canal treatment at the Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University between January 2021 and June 2022 were selected.They were randomly divided into a control group(52 patients receiving lithium disilicate full crown restorations)and a study group(52 patients receiving E-Max onlay restorations).The bonding effect,masticatory function,occlusal function,gingival index,plaque index,and complications were compared between the two groups.Results There was no significant difference in the success rates of retention,anatomical form integrity,marginal adaptation and tooth color matching,or proximal contact fit between the two groups at 12 months postoperatively(P>0.05).The study group showed better improvement in masticatory function,larger maximum occlusal contact area,lower occlusal force asymmetry index,and greater increase in maximum occlusal force compared to the control group(P<0.05).The improvements in gingival index and plaque index were greater in the study group than in the control group(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the overall complication rate between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion E-Max onlay restorations are superior to lithium disilicate full crowns in improving masticatory function and gingival health in endodontically treated posterior teeth,suggesting potential advantages of the minimally invasive onlay technique.
