Abstract:Metabolism-related fatty liver disease(MAFLD)is an increasingly serious liver disease, essentially manifesting as a multi-system metabolic dysfunction.Disease spectrum that affects the liver not only included liver diseases like fatty liver hepatitis, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer, but also extrahepatic diseases like type 2 diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, and chronic kidney disease.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)regulates the structure and function of gut microbiota, which improves beneficial bacteria and lower the growth of harmful bacteria, thereby restoring the Yin-Yang balance of gut microbiota, alleviating lipid accumulation and inflammatory response within the liver, and preventing and treating MAFLD.This article reviewed the research progress of TCM in improving MAFLD,analyzed the role of TCM in mediating MAFLD via regulating gut microbiota and metabolites, and explored clinical and basic research findings. Our review provided theoretical references of TCM in treating MAFLD,and issued the current challenges and future research direction.
