Clinical Study on the Effects of Resveratrol Supplementation on Clinical Parameters and Inflammatory Markers in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of resveratrol supplementation on clinical parameters and inflammatory markers in patients with chronic periodontitis. Methods A total of 100 patients with chronic periodontitis treated at our hospital were randomly divided into an intervention group ( n=50 ) and a control group ( n=50 ) .The intervention group received resveratrol supplementation, and the control group received a placebo for four weeks.Serum inflammatory markers, including interleukin-6 ( IL-6 ),tumor necrosis factor-alpha ( TNF-α ),and total antioxidant capacity ( TAC ),were measured before and after the intervention.Clinical parameters, including probing depth ( PD ),clinical attachment level ( CAL ),plaque index ( PI ),and bleeding index ( BI ),were assessed. Results The PI in the intervention group was significantly lower than in the control group after four weeks ( P<0.05 ) .However, there were no significant differences in PD,CAL,BI,or serum levels of TNF-α and TAC between the two groups ( P>0.05 ) .Notably,IL-6 levels in the intervention group decreased significantly post-intervent ion ( P<0.05 ) .Conclusion Resveratrol supplementation, combined with non-surgical periodontal treatment, demonstrates potential in improving periodontal health. However, its efficacy in reducing inflammatory markers requires further study.
