Abstract:Inner ear diseases are mainly treated with drugs. However, there is a blood-laby-rinth barrier between the inner ear and the systemic blood circulation, and only limited drug which is systemically applied goes into the inner ear. When the drug is locally applied into inner ear, the total dose can be reduced and the systemic side-effects can be avoided.Drug would work more efficiently in inner ear with local application.Recent 10-years’ studies demonstrate that the applications of lo-cal inner ear drug delivery include intra tympanic injection/trans eustachian tube drug delivery, de-layed /controlled delivery trans round window membrane and inner ear fenestration. The experimental applications comprise studies in the delayed pharmaceutics and apparatus for controlled drug delivery. This review summarized the development of the clinical and experimental studies on inner ear drug delivery, in order to collect useful information for a more minimal invasive and effective therapy for inner ear diseases.
