Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship strength between personal hygiene habits of young children and the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease(HFMD).Methods The children in the HFMD cluster epidemic class of the childcare institutions in the jurisdiction were included in the case group, and the healthy children in the same class were selected as the control group. The personal hygiene habits questionnaire was designed to investigate the personal hygiene habits of children, and the risk factors of onset were analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic unconditional regression methods. Results There were 38 patients in the case group and 54 persons in the control group. The results of univariate showed that there were statistically significant differences between the two groups in five variables, including proficient use of seven-step handwashing method(OR=0.21,P<0.05),handwashing after toilet(OR=0.25,P<0.05),hand rubbing of eyes(OR=5.18,P<0.05),rinsing mouth after each meal(OR=0.44,P<0.05),and grasping food with hands(OR=4.40,P<0.05).Multivariate results showed that proficiency in the seven-step handwashing method was a protective factor(OR=0.15,95%CI=0.03-0.88),and eye rubbing with hands(OR=5.64,95%CI=1.06-29.93)and hand-grasping food(OR=4.00,95%CI=1.32-12.09)were risk factors. Conclusion Hand, foot and mouth disease in preschool children of childcare institutions is closely related to personal hygiene habits, and it is necessary to strengthen the cultivation of children's seven-step handwashing habit and educate them to avoid rubbing their eyes and grasping food with their hands.
