Development and mosquito repellent activity of a compound plant essential oil solid mosquito repellent gel air freshener

Abstract：Objective To further clarify the repellent activity of the compound plant essential oil solid mosquito repellent gel air freshener(formula F-1)against Aedes albopictus,so as to provide a theoretical basis for the development of a novel mosquito repellent agent.Methods In this study,Ae.albopictus were used as test insects.The repellent activity of formula F-1 against Ae.albopictus was determined using a"Y"-tube olfactometer.The spatial repellent activity of formula F-1 against Ae.albopictus was measured by using the glass chamber method and the serial connected chamber method.According to the test method specified in the national standard GB/T 13917.9-2009,the repellent effect of formula F-1 against Ae.albopictus was determined.Results The"Y"-tube olfactometer tests showed that the repellent rates of the compound plant essential oil solid mosquito repellent gel air freshener(formula F-1)against Ae.albopictus were all over 66.0％.The glass chamber tests showed that the repellent rates were all over 54.0％.The serial connected chamber tests demonstrated that after being opened and placed at room temperature for 5 days,formula F-1 still showed a good repellent effect,with a repellent rate of 79.3％within 120 min against Ae.albopictus.The effective protection time of formula F-l was 4.0-4.5 hours,slightly superior to 15％citronella oil,and met the national grade B standard.Conclusion The formula F-l exhibits stable performance,significant mosquito repellent effect,and has the potential for industrial development.
