Survey on awareness of dengue fever and behavior of mosquito prevention among residents in Jinan City

Abstract:Objective To understand the awareness of dengue fever among residents in Jinan City and provide a scientific basis for effectively controlling dengue fever.Methods Selecting six regions of Jinan City with stratified sampling method,and conducting survey with a questionnaire interview way.Results Among 936 residents,900 questionnaires were taken back effectively,suggesting the effective response rate was 96.2%.57.2% residents knew dengue disease mainly by traditional media (56.9%) and new media (40.2%);77.7% residents knew that mosquitoes could transmit diseases,but only 26.9% knew the name of mosquito-borne diseases and 13.4% knew breeding characteristics of mosquito;45.8% residents stored water in indoor or outdoor place.Women,high-age group,and residents without knowledge of breeding characteristics were more likely to store water (P < 0.001);27.7% residents applied mosquito repellents when they went out.Significant differences were found in different sex,different careers and different ages (P < 0.001).Conclusion Lack of awareness of dengue fever was found in Jinan residents.Conduction of health education with targeted content and population seems to be necessary to improve the level of residents' knowledge and strengthen the consciousness of prevention and control of dengue fever.
