A preliminary study on the mosquito repellent effect of essential oil patches

Abstract:Objective To observe the mosquito repellent effect of patches containing essential oils.Methods Mosquitoes cage sting methods,Y type pipe method,mimic room test and application questionnaire were employed to evaluate the mosquito (Aedes albopictus) repellent effect of the patches respectively containing plant essential oils of citronella,eucalyptus,artemisiaand blended oils.5% dimethyl phthalate patches were set as the contrast.Results The test of mosquito cage sting method one showed that the citronella oil patches held the best mosquito repellent effects with the repellent ration of 78.2%,followed by the blended oil patches.The test of Y type pipe method displayed that the time of 90% mosquitoes reaching the no-patch branch driven by citronella oil patches was 14 minutes,4 minutes more than the 5% dimethyl phthalate patches.In the mimic room test,the 5% dimethyl phthalate patches were the strongest with the repellent ratio of 72.4% followed by the citronella oil patches of 68.4%.The application questionnaire reflected that most users were satisfied with the mosquito repellent effect of the citronella oil patches.Conclusion The citronella oil patches held good mosquito repellent effect,and was worth further study.
