Abstract:Radiotherapy, the use of ionizing radiation to destroy tumor cells,is one of the crucial methods for treating central nervous system tumors in clinical practice. However, radiotherapy can at the same time damage the surrounding healthy brain tissue, leading to irreversible cognitive impairments.Recently,ultra-high dose rate FLASH radiotherapy(FLASH-RT),which delivers doses exceeding 40 Gy/s,has shown the potential to effectively target brain tumors while minimizing its damage to normal brain tissue, thereby expanding the therapeutic window for treating central nervous system tumors. To gain deeper insights into the radiobiological effects and principles of FLASH-RT in central nervous system tumors, this article reviews recent foundational research and potential mechanisms related to FLASH-RT both domestically and internationally.
