Weaning and Extubation in Neurocritical Care Patients: Advances in Clinical Practice and Outcome Prediction
Abstract:Neurocritical care (NCC) patients often develop respiratory failure and require endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation to protect the airway and maintain oxygenation. Due to the impact of neurological lesions, these patients have a high extubation failure rate, which is associated with poor prognosis. However, there are currently no authoritative guidelines or high-quality evidence to guide weaning and extubation in NCC patients. This article introduces the indications for endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation in NCC patients, provides a general process for weaning and extubation in our center's neuro-intensive care unit (NICU), and summarizes research on factors predicting extubation outcomes and major prediction models.
