Effect of Piracetam Combined with Large Craniotomy on Serum S100B and NSE Levels in Patients with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of piracetam combined with large craniotomy on serum levels of S100B protein (S100B) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI). Methods A prospective study was conducted on 82 sTBI patients treated at Kailuan General Hospital from May 2022 to May 2024. The patients were randomly divided into a control group (41 cases) and an observation group (41 cases) using a random number table method. The control group received large craniotomy surgery, while the observation group received piracetam treatment in addition to the control group's treatment. The clinical efficacy, neurological function, cognitive function, and serum indicators of the two groups were compared. Results The total effective rate of treatment in the observation group was higher than that in the control group. After treatment, the NIHSS score, and the levels of S100B, NSE, and myelin basic protein (MBP) were lower in the observation group than in the control group, while the MMSE score was higher in the observation group. The differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion The combination of piracetam and large craniotomy can reduce the serum levels of S100B, NSE, and MBP, improve neurological and cognitive functions, and enhance the physiological self-care ability of patients with sTBI.
