Abstract:Objective The surgical therapeutic effect in acute adult cervical spinal cord injury without radiographic abnormalities (SCIWORA) was explored. Methods All 36 cases received the surgical decompression within 48 h after injury.According to ASIA impairment scale (AIS),ASIA motor and sensory scores, patients'neurologic impairment were evaluated at admission and at discharge. Results Among all 36 cases,AIS grade was A in 1 case,B in 17 cases, and C in 18 cases.Grade conversion took place in 77% of AIS Grade B patients and 83% of AIS Grade C patients at discharge.ASIA motor and sensory scores were improved statistically significant from 20.60 ± 9.78,86.30 ± 10.35 at admission to 56.20±10.71,159.20 ± 18.17 at discharge, respectively (P <0.01).Conclusion Adult SCIWORA patients can benefit significantly from early decompressive surgery.
