Abstract:Objective The study aims to clarify terminology concept of spinal neural tube defects (SNTD) and establish a SNTD classification which is available and canonical. Methods Data of 2020 cases of SNTD patients diagnosed and treated in our hospital between 1996 and 2016 were retrospectively analyzed.Based on clinical experience integrated with knowledge of embryology, pathology, medical imageology and operative therapeutics, the classification was made for the clinical practices. Results SNTD can be broadly divided into open spina bifida, closed spina bifida and caudal spine & cord malformation, including 16 kinds of diseases such as myelomeningocele, simply spina bifida, filum tenminale type tethered cord, frenum type tethered cord, myelolipoma, spinal dermal sinus tract, split cord malformation, spinal enterogenous cyst, meningocele, lipomyelomeningocele, occult meningocele within canalis sacralis, myelocystocele, anterior sacral meningocele, teratoma, currarino syndrom and sacral nerve dysplasia. Conclusion Agreement on a nomenclature and applying of canonical classification criteria are helpful in experience summarizing and academic exchange. This classification, which is concise and practical, may be a useful tool for clinical practice and scientific research.
