Abstract:Objective The clinical features of symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis were analyzed. Methods A total of 418 patients with carotid artery stenosis were divided into symptomatic group (272 cases) and asymptomatic group (146 cases). One hundred patients without carotid artery stenosis in our hospital were randomly selected as the control group. All patients were examined by cerebral angiography. The clinical features were compared among different groups. Results Multivariable Logistic regression analysis showed that smoke (OR =2.435,95% CI =1.816~8.215,P=0.019),coronary heart disease (OR=4.831,95% CI =2.471 ~12.908,P =0.007),hypertension (OR =2.375,95% CI =1.178 ~ 6.629,P =0.022),diabetes (OR =1.723,95% CI =1.117 ~ 2.930,P =0.041) and low density lipoprotein cholesterin (OR =1.966,95% CI =1.218 ~ 3.626,P =0.030) were associated with carotid artery stenosis. There was significant difference in smoke (47.8% vs 36.3%,P=0.024),coronary heart disease (47.1% vs 29.5%,P=O.000),diabetes (24.3% vs 12.3%,P=0.004),ulcerated plaques (19.5% vs 10.3%,P =0.015) and contralateral carotid artery stenosis (29.8% vs 20.5%,P =0.042) between symptomatic group and asymptomatic group. Conclusion Compared to asymptomatic group, more patients in symptomatic group are found with smoking history, coronary heart disease, diabetes, ulcerated plaques and contralateral carotid artery stenosis.
