The relativity research of hyperostosis and tumor invasion in meningioma of the cranial base
Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship of hyperostotic changes and tumor invasion in meningioma of the cranial base. Methods Forty-nine patients with meningioma of the cranial base underwent resection. Computed tomography such as preoperative radiographic evaluation was performed to identify the region and extent of hyperostosis. During the resection of the tumor, biopsies of tumor and its hyperostotic regions were sent out to identify whether there was bone invasion or not. Results Preoperative neuroradiological assessment identified that there were 24 patients with radiographic evidence of hyperostosis. Thirty-one cases had tumor invasion identified by biopsy in all 34 cases with hyperostosis of cranial base meningioma identified by computed tomography. Conclusion Hyperostotic changes in meningioma of the cranial base are caused by bone invasion of the tumor histologically which needs resecting thoroughly.
