The short-term effects of hemispherectomy to treat intractable epilepsy
Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical effectiveness of hemispherectomy on intractable epilepsy. Methods Patients with intractable epilepsy were treated by modified hemispherectomy and clinical effectiveness was followed-up after operation. Results The seizures of all the patients were effectively controlled and 94.4% (34/36) were thoroughly controlled. Meanwhile, the disfunction of central nervous system in 83.3% (30/36) of them were not worse, and 13.9% (5/36) became better than before. The value of neuropsychological assessment in all the patients was increased more or less. Conclusion For the patients with wide-ranging lesion in the cerebral hemisphere combined with intractable epilepsy, to take modified hemispherectomy positively will acquire good clinical effectiveness.
