Abstract:Intermuscular adipose tissue(IMAT)is an ectopic fat deposited between skeletal muscles. It causes mitochondrial dysfunction by secreting a variety of bioactive substances, interferes with insulin signaling pathway, and eventually leads to insulin resistance(IR).A large number of studies have shown that IMAT is considered as a key factor affecting skeletal muscle and whole body insulin sensitivity due to its unique anatomical location and active metabolic function. The association is affected by many factors, such as age, gender, race and lifestyle.Lifestyle intervention, drug therapy and surgery can reduce IMAT and affect the occurrence and development of IR.Future studies need to further analyze the differentiation and secretion regulation mechanism of IMAT cells, promote its application in individualized efficacy prediction and non-invasive evaluation, and provide new targets for the prevention and treatment of IR.
