Abstract：Ginkgo biloba extract(GBE),as a traditional Chinese medicine,has the functions of anti-inflammation,anti-oxidation,maintaining cell survival,inhibiting platelet activation,dilating blood vessels and regulating metabolism.It is widely used in clinical treatment of a variety of cardiovascular diseases,especially atherosclerosis.In the treatment of atherosclerosis,GBE can play a protective effect by acting on multiple pathways including 5'-adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase/protein kinase B,mitogen-activated protein kinase,phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/protein kinase B,nuclear factor E2-related factor/heme oxygenase-1.This article reviews the mechanism and clinical application of GBE in the treatment of atherosclerosis.
